What is Color Guard?

Color Guard is a performance art of dance, flag spinning, and using other props to tell a story to music. The Waukee Guard has two seasons, Fall Color Guard and Winter Guard.

In the fall color guard perform as part of the marching band program spinning flags, rifles, and sabres while moving on the field. Shows take place at halftime during home football games and on the weekends where they travel with the band to competitions.

In the winter color guard performs indoors to recorded music, still spinning and dancing, on a large colorful floor tarp. Color guard creates an artistic program that highlights all of the interesting skills that can be done with their equipment. The end of the winter season is celebrated with a performance for the home audience at the Waukee Winter Showcase.

How do you become a member of Color Guard?

Auditions for the fall guard are in April and winter guard auditions are usually in November. Anyone is welcome to audition. There is even a Junior Winter Guard for grades 6-8 that begins in January.

What are the time commitments of Color Guard?

Fall Guard rehearses with the marching band during the school year and holds additional sectional rehearsals on Tuesdays from 6-8pm.

Is there a fee to take part in Color Guard?

Yes, there is a fee to cover the cost of parts of the uniform and materials needed for the show. Details will be given by the director when they are available.
